Imotski Croatia – History and More

The first mention of Imotski can be found in the records of the Byzantine emperor Porphyrogenitus. Its history is evidenced by the castle Topana, which guards the city against a hill. It was built in the 10th century.

Imotski is located near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina and close to the coast, so it has always been interesting and strategically important. At the end of the 15th century, the city was conquered by the Turks, and during their rule, Imotski was an important administrative center. With its appearance and architecture, it is in many ways reminiscent of a coastal town.

Imotski Lakes Tour

An unavoidable part of Imotski tour is also the most recognizable symbol of the city of Imotski – the Blue and Red Lakes. Blue Lake is the end of the town, a giant sinkhole with an opening 800 meters long and 400 meters wide. It is 290 meters deep in its deepest part, and the water level varies throughout the year.

Near Blue Lake, just 1.5 km away, in Red Lake. It is bordered by the imposing red rocks after which it is named, and the lake’s bottom is below sea level. Football is played when it dries up at its bottom and trails to descend to the lake.

A dessert without which no ceremony can pass. It is prepared according to more than 150 years old and belongs to traditional Croatian cakes. Delicious dough stuffed with almonds-based filling, enriched with lemon flavors and homemade alcoholic products.

They have a beautiful look and a taste that conquers, so it is not surprising that they are an indispensable decoration of every table at weddings, birthdays, and other celebrations.

Rafioli is prepared in many towns on the coast according to similar but still different recipes, but the people of Imotski consider theirs unique and are proud of them.
